Sri Lanka, June 8 -- A wide-ranging investigation has been launched into an alleged financial fraud at the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) involving the purported payment of Rs.3,500 each to nearly 150,000 low-income earners in Colombo during the 2022 economic crisis.

A senior official of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry, established to investigate allegations of corruption and fraud at the Colombo Municipal Council, stated that the Commission's investigative division initiated this probe. Investigative officers are currently scrutinising all details, including whether these funds were genuinely paid out to low-income earners and who authorised the payments.
