President concerned over worsening human-elephant conflict
Sri Lanka, July 15 -- President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has shown concern over the worsening human-elephant conflict (HEC) in the country. This situation is created against a backdrop where, according to the Environment Ministry, one elephant is killed at least every day, while the human death toll has been exceeding 100 per year.
It is learnt that over the past three decades, 2,111 persons and 5,954 elephant have died due to the HEC.
The President has instructed the Environment Ministry and Wildlife Conservation authorities to pursue innovative approaches and optimal strategies to effectively tackle the HEC issue in collaboration with academics and all other stakeholders.
