Sri Lanka, Sept. 15 -- Project for Improving the Stormwater Drainage System and Environment Adjacent to the Piliyandala-Kesbewa Bypass Road

Urbanization activities carried out centrally in the Piliyandala area over the past decade-such as the construction of the Piliyandala-Kesbewa Bypass Road (Road No. 120) by filling paddy lands, and the construction of the Piliyandala Bus Stand under the Piliyandala Town Development Project-have exerted an adverse impact on the natural drainage pattern of the area.

Due to such filling of low-lying lands, the natural water retention capacity of the ground has significantly decreased, leading to increased surface runoff and flood risk situations even during minor rainfall.
