Sri Lanka, Oct. 6 -- A train travelling from Peradeniya to Colombo Fort derailed yesterday (05) when it struck a mound of rocks and earth that collapsed suddenly onto the railway track between the Kadigamuwa and Ihala Kotte railway stations.

Superintending Engineer (Upper District) of the Railway Department Dhanushka Dissanayake said the mound of earth collapsed onto the track due to heavy rain just as the train was passing the location.

He said the derailment was not caused by an issue with the railway track itself, adding that earth slips are frequently reported at this spot during rainy weather.
