Sri Lanka, June 25 -- Marking a significant milestone in the country's environmental governance framework, the long-awaited Bill to amend Sri Lanka's National Environment Act (NEA) was presented for final reading, debate and vote in Parliament yesterday (24).
The amended National Environmental (NEA) Bill represents Sri Lanka's first comprehensive environmental overhaul in nearly four decades, introducing modernised frameworks to tackle evolving ecological challenges. Initially enacted via the National Environmental Act No. 47 of 1980, this third major amendment establishes a paradigm shift toward strict regulatory compliance and developer accountability.
