Sri Lanka, March 26 -- The tank bunds of the historic Nuwara Wewa and Tissa Wewa reservoirs in Anuradhapura will be opened to vehicles despite safety concerns by the Irrigation Department and local community.

Trade Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe who initiated the opening of the tank bunds told Daily News the country at present is an attractive international tourism hub earning a lot of foreign exchange. 'Our aim is to accelerate the Anuradhapura tourism development plan to promote the region as an apex tourist destination. Therefore there is no need to keep the dams closed and deprive tourists from experiencing the culture and beauty these tanks have added to Sri Lanka's heritage.'Breaking News Alerts
