Sri Lanka, Feb. 24 -- In a major push to address the housing crisis, the Cabinet of Ministers has approved the establishment of a National Housing Steering Committee.
This new body will provide technical guidance, resolve monitoring issues, and oversee the implementation of the National Housing Programme 2026, titled "A Place of One's Own - A Beautiful Life."
The decision comes following the 2024 Population and Housing Census, which revealed a significant number of homeless individuals in Sri Lanka.
The government has identified homelessness as a critical social challenge affecting low-income earners, estate workers, the urban homeless, and those displaced by conflict or natural disasters.
