Sri Lanka, July 3 -- The Gampaha District Office of the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has filed legal action against 626 traders for violating consumer protection laws in the first six months of 2026, recovering more than Rs. 13.6 million in fines.
According to Gampaha District Head Udaya Namalgama the raids were carried out based on complaints received by the Gampaha District Office as well as information reported through the CAA's 1977 consumer hotline.
During inspections conducted across the district, the Authority carried out 62 raids related to rice sales. Most of these cases involved traders selling rice above the government-approved price. Courts imposed fines totaling Rs. 10 million in connection with these offences.
