Sri Lanka, June 30 -- A drinking water project to meet the water requirements of inmates at the Mahara Prison was inaugurated on Sunday.

The project will fulfill the water needs of 4,600 inmates and 275 officers.

Previously, the prison met its water requirements through the Water Supply Board, three wells located within the premises, and water bowsers.

Under that system, inmates were provided with a limited amount of water per day for bathing and other needs.

To provide a solution to this long-standing water shortage, Chairman of the Biyagama Tasma Group of Companies Nimal Subhasinghe Kariyapperuma made a financial donation of Rs. 1.3 million to construct a tube well on the premises by drilling 290 feet underground.
