Judges' retirement age extension under review
Sri Lanka, July 15 -- The Government is considering extending the retirement age of judges by two years in a bid to address an acute shortage of professionals and expedite a crippling backlog of court cases, Cabinet Spokesman Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa stated.
Speaking at the weekly Cabinet press briefing yesterday (14), Dr. Jayatissa emphasised that speeding up the legal process is critical to restoring public trust in the judiciary, which has faced mounting criticism over systemic delays.
He noted that from Magistrate's Courts to the Supreme Court, a massive number of cases have accumulated over the years, adding that the centralisation of key courts in Colombo has placed an additional burden on the public.
