Srilanka, Oct. 3 -- Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Mujibur Rahman has questioned whether raising prices under the guise of providing relief is what the government calls 'system change'.

The MP said the government paid Rs.4,100 million, approved by the Cabinet, to Indian and Chinese companies using the Value Added Tax (VAT) collected from the public on essentials.

These include milk, milk powder, rice, dhal, dried fish, canned fish and sugar. He stressed that the money was not brought in from elsewhere.

Rahman therefore described the relief the government is talking about as entirely impractical. "When relief is promised, everyone expects prices to drop, he said.
