Inflation reaches 8.1% lending rates edge higher
SriLanka, Sept. 28 -- Sri Lanka's headline inflation accelerated to 8.1 per cent in August 2026, from 7.2 per cent in July, while lending rates also moved higher during the week ended September 25, according to the latest Weekly Economic Indicators released by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL).
The CBSL's latest indicators show that food and non-food inflation increased to 9.3 per cent and 6.6 per cent, respectively, during August. Core inflation also accelerated to 6.3 per cent, from 6.0 per cent in July. Meanwhile, credit market conditions showed a modest tightening, with the Weekly Average Weighted Prime Lending Rate (AWPR) increasing by 18 basis points to 10.94 per cent for the week ended September 25.
