Sri Lanka, Oct. 20 -- Heavy rains experienced in many parts of the Kandy District on Saturday evening (17) caused the town of Akurana, located along the Kandy-Jaffna A-09 road, to be completely submerged.Check Forecasts

The inundation occurred as torrential rains, which began in the afternoon across Akurana and surrounding areas, caused both the Pinga Oya, which flows through Akurana town, and the Wahagala Oya, which flows parallel to Dunuwila Road before joining the Pinga Oya, to overflow.

Due to the submergence of the A-09 main road, vehicular traffic along this route came to a complete standstill. Police and the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) urged vehicle owners and drivers to use alternative routes.
