Sri Lanka, June 2 -- The National Rabies Control Programme states that more than Rs. 5 billion is spent annually on efforts to control rabies in Sri Lanka, as the country works towards eliminating rabies-related deaths by 2030.

Programme Director Dr. Niroshan Gamage said rabies fatalities have declined significantly in recent years, with 14 deaths reported in 2025 compared to 20 in 2024. Three deaths have been recorded during the first quarter of 2026.

He noted that the government spends around Rs. 800 million annually on human rabies treatment and prevention, while a further Rs. 2.5 billion is allocated for vaccinating dogs and other animals.
