Former Aviation Minister Piyankara Jayaratne sentenced to seven years' rigorous imprisonment
Sri Lanka, Sept. 1 -- Former Aviation Minister Piyankara Jayaratne has been sentenced to seven years of rigorous imprisonment by the Colombo High Court after being found guilty in a corruption case filed by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption.
The sentence was delivered today (01) when the case was taken up before Colombo High Court Judge Mohamed Mihail.
The case relates to an incident in 2014, when Jayaratne was serving as Minister of Civil Aviation. The prosecution alleged that he exerted influence over an executive officer of SriLankan Catering to arrange a payment from the state-owned company for refreshments provided to his supporters participating in the 2014 May Day parade.
