Extending judges' retirement age could help clear case backlog
Sri Lanka, July 16 -- Extending the service period of experienced senior judges could help address the backlog of cases in courts while making use of their judicial expertise for the benefit of the public, former MP and Democratic Left Front Secretary Vasudeva Nanayakkara has stated.
Issuing a statement, Nanayakkara said any extension of the service period of Superior Court judges should clearly reflect the genuine requirements of the judiciary.
He noted that, as the fundamental principle of justice states, "Justice must not only be done, but must also be seen to be done," and therefore the relevant authorities and the Constitutional Council must exercise greater caution when dealing with judicial matters.
