Sri Lanka, Aug. 20 -- An elderly female giraffe at the Dehiwala Zoo died on Tuesday night (18), the National Zoological Gardens Department said in a media release issued yesterday (19).Media Spokesman Updates
The giraffe was close to thirty years old at the time of death.
According to the Department, giraffes typically live 20 to 25 years in the wild and can live longer under managed care in a zoo. The Department noted that the animal had therefore enjoyed a long life.
No underlying medical condition had been reported in the giraffe prior to its death. The Department said the death appears to be linked to natural causes associated with old age, and further post mortem examinations were carried out yesterday (19).
