Sri Lanka, Feb. 25 -- The Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) has addressed a major backlog by printing and issuing permanent driving license cards to individuals who previously received temporary licences. Around 400,000 licences have been issued so far to drivers who were previously given temporary licences to clear the backlog caused by a card shortage," Commissioner General of Motor Traffic Kamal Amarasinghe said.
The initiative aims to clear backlogs, supported by expanded service locations for processing, including Werahera, BIA, Kurunegala, Hambantota, Gampaha, Anuradhapura and Jaffna as of February 2026.
