SriLanka, Sept. 23 -- The Depression over the Northwest Bay of Bengal, northeast of Sri Lanka, has intensified into a Deep Depression, according to the Department of Meteorology.

Although the system is not expected to directly affect Sri Lanka, rainy conditions in the southwestern parts of the island are expected to continue due to wind flow towards the system.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and North-western provinces, as well as in Galle and Matara districts. Heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm is possible in some areas.

Several spells of showers may occur in the North-central Province and Mannar District.
