BIA to be upgraded to major South Asian aviation hub
Sri Lanka, June 16 -- The development of Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake, slated to begin shortly, is expected to ease heavy passenger congestion and transform the airport into a major South Asian aviation hub.
Particularly, the Terminal 1 expansion project aims to significantly increase the overall passenger handling capacity of the airport by modernising the departure and arrival areas, check-in and boarding facilities, and immigration and transit areas.
This project is expected to add an additional handling capacity of more than 500,000 passengers annually, over and above the current capacity.
