Authorities report thousands of child abuse cases islandwide
Sri Lanka, June 2 -- The number of child abuse cases reported in the country over the past ten years has exceeded 100,000.
According to the President of the Doctors' Trade Union Alliance for Medical and Civil Rights, Dr. Chamal Sanjeeva, policy decisions are absolutely essential regarding the occurrence of such a significant number of child abuse cases which are based on statistics from the Children and Women's Bureau, the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA), hospitalised cases and incidents that have gone unreported to the law.
He highlighted how both girls and boys fall victim to child abuse, and in the majority of cases, there is a higher probability that the abuser is someone closely known to the child.
