Uganda, April 24 -- The Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI) on Friday afternoon discharged its first bone marrow transplant patient, Stephen Sande, who had been treated for multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer.

Health Minister Dr Jane Ruth Aceng, who presided over the discharge ceremony, confirmed that Sande is the first patient to undergo a bone marrow transplant in Uganda.

The procedure was carried out by a team of Ugandan scientists and health workers led by Dr Clement Okello and Dr Henry Ddungu, both based at UCI.
