Uganda, May 8 -- Rapid expansion of sugarcane farming in Busoga sub-region is accelerating deforestation and wetland degradation, raising concern among environmental authorities and development agencies despite growing tree restoration efforts.

Environmental officials warn that the fast-growing sugar industry is increasingly replacing forests and fragile ecosystems, exposing communities to long-term risks including flooding, drought, biodiversity loss and declining soil fertility.

Assessments across the sub-region show that sugarcane cultivation has expanded into wetlands and forested areas despite existing environmental protection laws.
