Uganda, April 19 -- Health officials in Lyantonde District have raised concern over a surge in HIV infections among children, warning of growing vulnerability among young people.
As of April 19, district health data shows HIV prevalence currently stands at 10.1 percent, with 33 children under 15 testing positive in just three months, accounting for nine percent of new cases.
According to Charity Mbabazi, the trend is worrying. Out of 13,825 people tested over the period, 366 were found HIV positive, including adolescents aged 15 to 19.
Mbabazi said 1,888 people below the age of 20 are currently on antiretroviral treatment in the district, pointing to increasing exposure among young people.
