Uganda, May 14 -- Retiring Court of Appeal judge Fredrick Egonda-Ntende has criticised fellow judicial officers for denying bail to opposition politician Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro to enable him bury his wife, describing the decision as inhumane and inconsistent with constitutional guarantees.

Justice Egonda-Ntende, who officially retires on June 15, made the remarks during a special sitting of the Court of Appeal held on Thursday in honour of his judicial service.

Without directly naming Mr Mufumbiro, the judge referred to media reports about children burying their mother without the presence of their father, who remained on remand despite seeking temporary release.
