Uganda, April 23 -- Ntungamo District has embarked on fish farming as one of the livelihood sectors for its people.
According to the authorities, the sector will not only improve incomes but also nutrition and reduce encroachment on fragile ecosystems like wetlands.
The district fisheries officer, Mr Amos Besigye, said they are currently supporting at least 145 farmers in different sub-counties practicing pond fish farming and have supplied them with feeds, fish seed (fingerlings) and advisory services.
He said a number of residents have land that falls in fragile ecosystems like wetlands and fish farming can be a viable livelihood project here that can improve people's livelihoods.
