Uganda, April 24 -- More than 1,000 Ugandans who depend on fishing at Lake Edward are facing job losses after authorities suspended 67 fishing vessels following a presidential directive to scale down operations.
The order reduces the number of vessels allowed on the lake from 100 to 33, a move officials say is aimed at regulating fishing and protecting depleted stocks.
The enforcement, led by the Resident District Commissioner's office with support from district fisheries officials, has already disrupted livelihoods at Rwenshama landing site in Rukungiri District.
