Court orders govt to pay activists Shs10m over detention beyond 48 hours
Uganda, May 4 -- The High Court in Kampala has ordered the government to pay Shs10 million in general damages to three environmental activists for being unlawfully detained for more than 48 hours after their arrest during an anti-EACOP protest near Parliament on November 24, 2023.
Tevin Debo Sean, Ivan Elvis Sanya, and Eric Ssekandi of Rooted in Resistance argued in court their prolonged detention disrupted their lives and caused them to miss examinations and graduation at Kyambogo University.
They had asked the court to award each general of them damages of up to Shs 200 million and exemplary or punitive damages of Shs 100 million for the psychological torture, mental anguish and emotional distress they suffered.In a ruling delivered v...
