Sri Lanka, Sept. 3 -- A private bus carrying a group of pilgrims returning from Kataragama veered off the road and overturned after a wild elephant obstructed its path and struck the vehicle in the Buttala area.

The pilgrims, who were from Chilaw, were travelling back home when the accident occurred. The bus was carrying around 45 passengers at the time.

Police said the driver lost control of the bus after the elephant suddenly obstructed the road and hit the vehicle.

At least 10 passengers were injured in the accident and admitted to the Kataragama Hospital for treatment. A hospital spokesman said all the injured were out of danger.

Kataragama Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.
