Sri Lanka, Aug. 13 -- The question of whether we need the death penalty or not has once again come to the limelight. A news report read that the Welikada gallows are ready if the death penalty is going to be imposed. After 1976, Sri Lanka didn't witness any executions taking place. The final judicial execution took place on June 23, 1976. The prisoner executed was convicted criminal Embilipitiye Chandradasa, also known as "Honda Papuwa", and not D.J. Siripala, widely known as "Maru Sira", as it is widely believed. Maru Sira was hanged in 1975.
