Welikada gallows ready if death penalty imposed
Sri Lanka, Aug. 12 -- The Welikada Prison gallows remain ready for use if the government decides to resume executions, with two executioners currently attached to the prison and on standby, the Daily Mirror learns.
The disclosure comes amid renewed government attention on the possible reintroduction of the death penalty in Sri Lanka.
According to a prison official, the two executioners are attached to the Welikada Prison. While they are currently permitted to remain at their respective residences, they are receiving standard salaries and are on standby for duty. The identities of both individuals are being kept strictly confidential for their safety.
