Vehicle number plate backlog to be cleared within six months
Sri Lanka, Sept. 9 -- The Department of Motor Traffic expects to clear the remaining backlog and provide new number plates within seven days after the next six months, newly appointed Commissioner General of the Department of Motor Traffic, Vice Marshal (Retd.) Thushara Idunil Fernando said.
Addressing the media, Fernando said nearly 62,000 vehicle number plates had been printed since March 10, 2026, and the public had been informed to collect their number plates.
He said a further 32,000 printed number plates relating to vehicle registrations carried out in 2023 and 2024 remained at the department.
Another contract will be signed next week to print vehicle number plates relating to the backlog created by vehicle registrations in 2025...
