Sri Lanka, April 28 -- The US $ 2,5 million theft had made the partly leaders' meeting yesterday stormy with the opposition calling for a debate on the issue, and the ruling party rejecting it.
Chief Opposition Whip Gayantha Karunathilleka said the request was made for a one-day debate on the $ 2.5 million threat during the next parliamentary week, which is set to begin on May 5, but the ruling party refused it over and over again.
"We called for a debate many times at yesterday's meeting, but the government kept on rejecting our request. We stressed that Parliament is bound by the duty of discussing the issue as the legislature holds power over public finances. However, our request was turned down over and over again," the MP said.
