Sri Lanka, March 13 -- Two officials attached to the Fire and Emergency Rescue Division of the Trincomalee Municipal Council have been arrested for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs. 20,000.

According to the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption, a Fire Officer (Officer-in-Charge) and a firefighter were arrested following a complaint made by a resident of Kantale.

Investigations revealed that the suspects had allegedly demanded Rs. 40,000 to issue a fire safety certificate for 2026 to a tourist restaurant located in the centre of Kantale town. The amount was later reduced to Rs. 35,000, with Rs. 10,000 requested to be deposited into a bank account and the remaining Rs. 25,000 to be paid in cash.
