Sri Lanka, Sept. 22 -- A train driver who had been charged before Kekirawa Magistrate's Court for the death of a wild elephant that was run over by train was acquitted, and the case was terminated by Kekirawa Magistrate Udari Gunasekara.

Wildlife officers had charged the suspect driver N.A.D.P.Gunatilaka with causing the death of a wild elephant that was run over at Habarana by the Colombo-bound express train from Trincomalee driven by him. He had been attached to Trincomalee Railway Station at the time of the accident.

When the case was taken up, Attorney-at- Law Anuruddha Wijeratne, appearing for the suspect driver, told court that Wildlife officers should be liable to legal action for their failure in wild elephant management and ne...
