Tear gas fired as Pallansena Prison unrest escalates
Sri Lanka, Aug. 7 -- Police fired tear gas to control a tense situation at the Pallansena Open-Air Correctional Centre in Dalupotha, Negombo, after a group of inmates staged a protest on the prison roof.
The inmates were reportedly pelting stones at prison officers amid the unrest, according to an Ada Derana reporter at the scene.
Security has been tightened around the correctional centre, with police, the Police Special Task Force (STF), the Police Riot Control Unit and the Sri Lanka Air Force deployed to contain the situation.
