Sri Lankan government has sovereign rights to amend country's laws: Justice Minister
Sri Lanka, Aug. 18 -- The government of Sri Lanka has the sovereign right to amend the country's laws in line with the people's mandate, Minister of Justice Harshana Nanayakkara told Parliament today.
Responding to a question raised by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa on the statements made by international bodies on the 22nd amendment to the Constitution, the Minister said neither Law Asia, the Commonwealth Bar Association or any other international body has taken up the issue with the Sri Lankan government.
However, he said the UN Special Rapporteur in Sri Lanka will be briefed on the new legislation shortly by the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
