Sri Lanka, Sept. 10 -- Sri Lanka has urged UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk to ensure that country-specific human rights mandates are not allowed to continue indefinitely, calling for periodic reviews and clear mechanisms to bring them to an end when countries demonstrate progress.

Sri Lanka's Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva, Ambassador Sumith Dassanayake, made the call during the General Debate under Agenda Item 2 at the 63rd Session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on Tuesday (8).

Dassanayake told the Council that no mandate should be regarded as indefinite, and that country-specific mandates should be periodically reviewed against clearly defined objectives and measurable outcomes.
