Sri Lanka, March 28 -- A new "SMART Railway Service" is set to be introduced to modernise Sri Lanka's railway ticketing system, with a pilot programme scheduled to begin in early April.

The initiative, developed under the CSRP project, aims to strengthen and streamline the existing online train ticketing facility by introducing a new digital ticketing system along with equipment to verify tickets at railway stations, replacing the current manual ticketing process.

The pilot project will be launched at several stations along the Kelani Valley line, including Narahenpita Railway Station, Nugegoda Railway Station, Makumbura Railway Station, Homagama Railway Station and Padukka Railway Station.
