Sri Lanka, Sept. 18 -- The Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre has issued an advisory warning of severe lightning activity in several areas, valid until 11.30 p.m. today (18).

According to the advisory issued at 11.00 a.m., thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are likely at several places in the Uva and Eastern provinces and in the Mullaittivu and Polonnaruwa districts.

Temporary localised strong winds may also occur during thundershowers, the Department of Meteorology warned.

The public has been urged to take adequate precautions to minimise possible damage caused by lightning activity.

The Department advised the public to seek shelter, preferably indoors, and avoid taking shelter under trees during thunderstorms.
