Sri Lanka, Aug. 3 -- Authorities have stepped up security at prisons across the country after the violent unrest at the Mahara Prison left one inmate dead, several others injured, and caused extensive damage to prison property.

Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (SDIG) Sajeewa Medawatta said special security measures and close monitoring have been implemented at all prisons nationwide.

He said that additional attention has been directed towards key facilities, including Welikada, Magazine, Kalutara and Negombo prisons, to prevent similar incidents.

The unrest, which began on Saturday (01) afternoon at the Mahara Priso continued until the early hours of yesterday before security forces succeeded in restoring order.
