Sri Lanka, Aug. 27 -- Sri Lankan Tamils who fled to Tamil Nadu during the height of the armed conflict have been living in isolated conditions for many years. In May 2025, a 75-year-old Tamil refugee was arrested as he returned to the island at Palaly airport, despite being recognised by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and obtaining all necessary clearance. This incident raised concerns regarding Sri Lanka's sensitivity towards the refugee repatriation process.
