Sri Lanka, Sept. 3 -- Traffic police officers have been instructed not to issue charge sheets to motorists solely for failing to produce a digital vehicle insurance card, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) in charge of the Traffic Control and Road Safety Range W.P.J. Senadheera said.

Addressing a media briefing today (3), DIG Senadheera said officers have been instructed to verify the validity of a vehicle's insurance coverage using the driver's mobile phone or the officer's own mobile phone.

He said causing inconvenience to motorists by failing to follow instructions issued by the Inspector General of Police regarding digital insurance cards would amount to a serious dereliction of duty.
