Sri Lanka, Aug. 7 -- Sri Lanka Police have filed 271,890 cases relating to safety helmet violations during the first seven months of 2026, highlighting continued non-compliance among motorcycle riders.

Director of the Road Safety, Traffic and Control Division of the Sri Lanka Police, Senior Superintendent of Police Manoj Ranagala, said the cases were recorded between January 1 and July 31 this year. In 2025, police had filed 349,823 such cases.

Speaking at a special media briefing held today (7) at the Ministry of Transport Auditorium in Colombo, SSP Ranagala urged motorcyclists to wear helmets primarily to protect their lives rather than simply to avoid police action or legal penalties.
