Legal action over destruction of 110 trees in Wilpattu buffer zone
SriLanka, Sept. 19 -- Legal action has been initiated against those responsible for the destruction of around 110 trees in the Nelum Wewa area of Parana Eluwankulama, Vanathavilluwa, located within the buffer zone of the Wilpattu National Park.
A joint field inspection was conducted on September 18 following intervention by the Ministry of Environment, with officials from the Central Environmental Authority (CEA), Forest Conservation Department, Department of Wildlife Conservation, North Western Provincial Environmental Authority and several other state institutions.
The inspection found that approximately 110 trees had fallen after being damaged by fire, including 61 large Kumbuk trees, 24 Bakmee trees and two Madan trees.
