Judicial Retirement Age: Let the Judges' Wishes Guide the Way
Sri Lanka, Aug. 20 -- Opposition and divergent views have emerged among stakeholders over the Government's proposal to amend the Constitution and increase the retirement age of judges. While President A K Dissanayake appears determined to proceed, a practical and less contentious solution deserves consideration.
First and foremost, why not fill the existing vacancies in the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal without delay? This would immediately strengthen the judiciary and address concerns arising from the present shortage of judges.
Secondly, the Government should ascertain whether the serving judges themselves wish to continue in office beyond the existing retirement age. If a significant number are willing to serve longer, the case...
