SriLanka, Sept. 21 -- The Irrigation Department has warned of rising river levels and possible minor flooding in several areas as heavy rainfall continues across the country's wet zone.

Significant rainfall has been recorded in Galle, Matara, the Western, North Western and Sabaragamuwa Provinces, as well as Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Matale, the Department said.

Irrigation Director Engineer L.S. Sooriyabandara said the upper reaches of the Kelani River had received 100-125 mm of rainfall by this morning, while most other river basins recorded 50-80 mm during the past 24 hours.

Although rainfall has eased compared to previous days, rain continues in several areas.
