HEC reaches tipping point: Fresh proposal aims to foster human-elephant coexistence in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka, Aug. 17 -- Sri Lanka has lost nearly 3500 wild elephants and at least 1500 people as a result of the aggravating human-elephant conflict (HEC) between 2015 and 2024. Official figures indicate that in 2023 alone, at least 488 elephants were killed in addition to 182 people. During the first seven months of 2025 at least 245 elephants have been killed in addition to 77 people. With rapidly diminishing forest cover and deprivation of elephant home ranges due to development projects, agricultural expansion and establishment of human settlements, HEC has reached a tipping point.
