Sri Lanka, May 14 -- The Department of Meteorology has issued a red warning for heavy rainfall affecting several parts of the country, warning that showers exceeding 100 mm are likely in some areas.

According to the department, the warning is in effect for the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-Western provinces, as well as the Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle and Matara districts.

The department said the low-pressure area located northeast of Sri Lanka continues to persist, although it is expected to gradually move away from the island and weaken over the next 36 hours.

Heavy showers exceeding 100 mm are likely at some places in the affected provinces and districts, the department said.
