Govt. has "touched the robe"- don't go further: Duminda
SriLanka, Oct. 8 -- Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) General Secretary Duminda Dissanayake urged the Government not to interfere with the robes of Buddhist monks, warning that such actions could undermine Sri Lanka's Buddhist heritage and civilisation.
Addressing the media, Dissanayake said Sri Lanka was a country with a predominantly Sinhala-Buddhist character and that Buddhist temples and monks had played a central role in the country's history and society.
"Every Sinhala village has temples and Buddhist monks, while some villages have more than one temple. Therefore, the Government should remember that this is a Buddhist country with a long history and a society centred around Buddhist monks and temples," he said.
